Open doors. Open minds. Open hearts.
That is what you will find at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Hollywood. We are a smaller congregation where members know and care for each other. We pay tribute to and respect tradition, yet welcome new ideas and change.
St. Johns is a member of the Evangelical Church in America (ELCA). We are a Reconciling in Christ congregation, where everyone is welcome to participate fully in worship and programs, regardless of race, culture, gender identity, sexual orientation, family status, health, faith tradition or economic circumstance. Pets are welcome to worship with their humans.
A long history
St. Johns was founded in 1926, when the original 28 members began worshiping together in a theater. After a hurricane leveled the building, the nascent congregation gathered in a community hall in the city of Dania.
The first church building was constructed in Spanish style and dedicated in 1931, fulfilling a dream for the 28 original members. But by 1955, the congregation was outgrowing that dream. Classes were being held in the parsonage, garage and living room, the church kitchen and even a storage room.
In an era when two-seat T-Birds, crew cuts and Elvis were the rage, the St. Johns family had a new dream: to have a new building—a place to gather, to worship, and to serve. The new building, congregational leaders said, would not be an expense, but an investment.
Today, we continue that dream—for inspiring worship, an inclusive church family, and serving our local community and the larger global community in meaningful ways. We invite you to join us.
